Snowflake Challenge Part 2

So after I was disappointed with Round 1, I dismantled and started fresh.  I added my own silver chain, freshwater pearls and some other beads.  I had nothing in mind other than making something I liked.  Blue is my favorite color, so I definitely wanted to use as many of the kit's beads as possible.  I added a pair of simple earrings from the beads I did not use on the necklace.  I added the pearls so that the necklace did not have too much of a winter feel to it.  I tend to wear blue more in the summer than the winter, so I designed the necklace to be worn over a turtleneck as well as with a v-neck t-shirt and a navy cardigan.

I have no intention of selling this set, unless the price is right. ;-)

For those who aren't part of the contest, here is the kit we received. . . .

Here's the chaos  .  .  .  .

Here's the finished product . . . . 22" necklace and earrings. . . .

A close-up of the beautiful pendant and blue beads . . . .

And finally, here's the necklace, on a black background.

  1. Very, very pretty...and I had to laugh at your first sentence, because I think it's probably quite unusual for a design to be perfect on the first try! I spend more time taking pieces apart than I do assembling them in the first place...

    1. Thank you. :-)

I usually re-design as I'm making . .. rather than making, tearing apart and then remaking again. So this process was actually quite odd for me.

  2. I also started and restarted several times before I worked out what I finally came up with. But I do like the second design much better.

  3. So pretty Jennifer! I just loved seeing what everyone did with the focals :)

  4. I love the asymmetrical design of your piece and you combined everything so nicely. Good job.

    1. Thank you. Asymmetrical stuff is tricky to still make it feel "balanced". I'm happy to see so many positive remarks.

  7. It's brave to take things apart and start over. It may seem like other designers never do this, but trust me, they do it all the time! I like this new version, especially how you used the smaller links.

Your chaos looks pretty controlled compared to mine. :)

    Thanks for joining the challenge!

    1. I usually re-design and re-do while in the middle of the piece. To finish, photograph and then dismantle was out of the ordinary for me. But I am happy with the 2nd one.
The "chaos" wouldn't be bad, but it was my kitchen table. I don't have dedicated studio space, so I have to put everything away after each project. :-(

  8. Very clean and interesting components! I really like the dangle on the focal and the general casual yet sophisticated look of the piece. Nicely done!

    1. Thank you. :-) The Swarovski crystals on the jump rings were a total last minute add-on.

  9. Lovely. I really like this. I didn't give my set up, either, so I don't blame you a bit.

  10. Jennifer, I love, love, love your necklace! I'll bet it is stunning when worn. Blue is my favorite color too, and I thought this would be a breeze. But trying to make a necklace gave me the most trouble.

    Great job!

    1. Thank you so much. I also thought the pieces would be easier to work with until I actually started . . my drawings were way cooler on paper than in real form. I was tempted to drill a 2nd hole in the large focal piece to make it into a bracelet. (I am happy I did not do that though)

  11. I love your final piece! I'm impressed you used all of the different blues. (I kept editing them out.)

    1. Thank you! I wanted it to be mostly blue so that I could wear it with all of my spring & summer navy blue clothes . . . . but I'm actually wearing it today with a black turtleneck sweater and it is quite stunning with black, too.

  14. Jennifer, I think your second round on the necklace turned out wonderful. I really like your design it is beautiful. I don't do well with asymmetrical design, I'm too OCD I guess.

    1. LOL @ thank you! The crooked stuff is way trickier . .. . but for some odd reason, I did not want symmetry on this one at all.

  16. Just a note - there's a few blogs where I could not leave comments (comment form is locking up on me). But I truly did enjoy seeing eveyrone's work. This was a fun challenge and a great experience. :-)

  17. I love the addition of the stick pearls and the asymmetry of the whole piece. I am among those who have difficulty designing anything that isn't symmetrical! Very nice work!
